What is Tinnitus?
Has it ever happened to you that you come back from a party or a club in Sydney and your ears didn’t stop ringing for a long time? Or maybe they are still ringing infuriatingly. That’s tinnitus! That is the reason why your ears keep ringing.
Tinnitus, also referred to as ‘ringing in the ear’, is the medical term for ringing, buzzing roaring, whistling or hissing sound in the ear. The sounds may appear as if coming from nearby but there isn’t any sound source on the outside hence it is also called the phantom sound.
What Causes Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is caused due to prolonged exposure to loud sound sources such as speakers, drilling machines etc. basically everything that produces a sound over 85 dB. The exposure to loud sound damages the very fine hair cells that line in the ear. The louder the sound, the more prone you are to noise-induced hearing loss which can be irreversible.
Although in most of the cases tinnitus goes away itself in a couple of days. But that depends on the health of your ears.
How To Deal With Mild Cases?
Although it is advisable to get tinnitus management by a professional, here are some tips that you can use to help the stress and relieve some of the pain.
- Listen to relaxing white noise
- Distract yourself
Try listening to some calm podcast, or engage yourself in an activity that you find interesting but is not noisy at the same time.
- Meditate
Meditating will help you focus away from the noise, thus calming you down and reducing your stress.
But under any circumstance, do not expose yourself to loud music or anything that would make the tinnitus worse.
Do I need tinnitus management?
In mild of the cases? Probably not. Generally, the tinnitus is temporary and the ringing goes away within 48 hours. The hair cells in your ear take time to heal and regenerate so it is advisable to stay away from the noise for at least a week if not more.
If the damage is above average then the situation can be concerning and your ears can become prone to tinnitus due to damage. The ear becomes more sensitive to noise and If overlooked then this can lead to severe tinnitus causing hearing impairment or in rare cases, deafness.
Tips to Avoid Getting Tinnitus
In order to avoid getting tinnitus again or in the first place, protect your ears from loud music! Regulate the volume level of your television, radio, mobile, care etc to a safe level. If the warning says ‘it is too loud for your ears’, trust the warning. If you work at a loud place like construction, pubs, traffic etc, where you have to come in the exposure to loud sound then do so wearing ear protection.
If you are an artist then remember using earplugs while performing on the stage to reduce the stress on your ears
Do not take self-prescribed drugs, this most surely will make the situation worse. Do not put any ear drops in your ears without consulting your audiometrist first.
